What defines drug dependence?

Drug dependence is characterized by a consistent use of a substance to the extent that an individual experiences difficulty functioning without it. Similarly, using a drug only in stressful situations suggests a more situational use rather than a dependence. Finally, an inability to recall drug usage times might indicate issues relating to memory but does not necessarily align with the compulsive need or functional impairment characteristic of drug dependence. Therefore, consistent use that hinders proper functioning is the defining aspect of drug dependence.
